I'm new to Bikram's Yoga. Do I need to bring anything to class or prepare?

Yes! New students and yoga practioners of all levels are welcome. If this is your first class at our studio, please arrive at least 15 minutes early. We start checking people in for class one half hour before class starts. Heed the following tips for the best experience... drink

  • Come to class well hydrated. You will sweat a great deal in class, so prior hydration is important.
  • Refrain from eating 1 - 3 hours before class. For most students, taking class on an empty stomach facilitates their practice.
  • Wear light, comfortable clothes - similar to what you would wear to go running in July!
  • Bring a yoga mat, large towel and bottle of water. Rental mats and towels are also available.

Do I need to make reservations? What do I need to do when I come the first time?

You do not need to make reservations or call ahead. Just pick a time and arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled time. If you like, you could print and fill out the student release sheet and bring it with you. Click here [PDF].

Can I take a Bikram’s class if I’ve never taken yoga before?

Yes! It is a beginning class; anybody can do it – any age, size, shape, condition, or background. We do only beginning Yoga postures -- nothing that can hurt or injure you. Rather than moving continuously from posture to posture, in Bikram’s Yoga you hold the postures still while exerting maximum effort. This is one of the primary principles of Hatha Yoga.

Why the heat?

Bikram’s Yoga is practiced in a heated room to promote cellular metabolism, detoxification, and suppleness of the muscular system, providing a greater level of safety when doing the poses. Read more on the Benefits page

Will I get a good cardio-vascular workout?

You will get a great cardio-vascular workout. The Bikram’s series works your heart and lungs in two ways. The first half of class is designed to gradually take your heart rate up, building your endurance. Postures in the second half of class quickly take your heart rate up, and then bring it down, several times. This approach builds your cardio-vascular strength. Most others exercises and sports challenge your cardio-vascular system one way, or the other… not both!

Is Bikram’s Yoga challenging?

The Bikram’s series is challenging. While accessible to beginners, Bikram’s Yoga requires that every student, no matter their level, make demands on him or herself. As these are required of you, they also develop within you.

"When we begin to understand the total being that is man, we realize that he is no simple organism. Within him are many powers whose potential he employs in greater or lesser degree in accomdating himself to the conditions of this world. Their potential is vastly greater than the average person thinks" ~ The Great Paramahansa Yogananda

"Hatha yoga, this thousands of years old practice, has been called "the yoga of will power." Just doing it strengthens our will, an attribute of mind. When we have the positive experience of being able to do more than we expected, our confidence and self-esteem get a boost, fostering a more positive mind. We begin including positive thoughts about ourselves, and allow negative self-talk to fade away. Our practice strengthens our mind. The mind has five aspects which as they develop, bring equanimity to the mind.

Faith, Self-control, Determination, Concentration, and Patience. Each of these five develop by practicing Bikram's Yoga. When we're forced to do something that is against our own nature, our soul is unhappy, there is no peace. When the soul is unhappy, pain begins to trouble the body as well. Rather than change your ways to conform with the world, you must eventually find a way to express your truth from your heart regardless of the world."
~ Bikram Choudhury
